ree

Phoenix House International School opened in August 2021 in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, as a British-style international school. Based on the UK National Curriculum, it provides high-quality foundational education in English, mathematics, and science for children from Year 1 to Year 6 (equivalent to Japanese kindergarten senior year to elementary grade 5). The school adopts a small class structure (48 students per grade, with a total capacity of 288 students), ensuring an environment that values each student’s individual learning experience.

Additionally, Phoenix House is a member of COBIS (Council of British International Schools), a globally recognized authority in British international education. It has earned Beacon School Status for Excellence in Student Safety and Well-being, a prestigious recognition granted to only 15 out of 450 COBIS schools worldwide, making it the first school in Japan to achieve this honor. Furthermore, Phoenix House is affiliated with IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools), a prestigious UK organization, and has been listed in The Good Schools Guide (GSG), affirming its high educational standards.

The five-story, purpose-built campus features spacious, naturally lit classrooms and wide hallways, creating an open and dynamic learning environment.

The campus includes a large dining room with benches handcrafted by students, a gymnasium equipped for basketball and badminton, and a professional-grade dance studio. The school also emphasizes extracurricular activities, offering a variety of sports in both the school gym and nearby sports facilities, including soccer and swimming. Dance and drama classes take place in a Harlequin-floored dance studio, and major performances are held at local professional theaters. Despite being located in the heart of Tokyo, Phoenix House provides state-of-the-art facilities and diverse extracurricular programs, ensuring students develop both academically and creatively to their fullest potential.

Curriculum Overview

ree

At Phoenix House International School, education is based on the UK National Curriculum (Key Stage 1 & 2), designed for children from Year 1 to Year 6 (equivalent to Japanese kindergarten senior year to elementary grade 5). The school provides a comprehensive learning experience in English, mathematics, and science, complemented by history, geography, art, music, physical education (PE), computer science, and foreign languages (Japanese, French, and Chinese). The curriculum aims to foster creativity and critical thinking skills in students.

Key Stage 1 (Year 1–2)

Key Stage 1 focuses on building foundational literacy and numeracy skills for children aged 5 to 7. Students develop their reading and writing abilities using phonics, engage in basic math calculations, and explore scientific concepts through inquiry-based learning. Additionally, they study computer science, history, geography, art & design, music, PE, and foreign languages. In Year 1, students take a Phonics Screening Check to assess their English proficiency, while in Year 2, national tests measure their understanding of English and mathematics.

Key Stage 2 (Year 3–6)

Key Stage 2 targets students aged 7 to 11, emphasizing advanced reading comprehension, writing skills, mathematical reasoning, and scientific inquiry. English classes focus on text analysis and logical writing, while math lessons cover fractions, decimals, and data analysis. Science education is enriched through hands-on experiments. Additionally, students deepen their knowledge in history, geography, programming, sports, and art & music. In Year 6, students take national tests that evaluate their comprehensive abilities in English, mathematics, and science, ensuring they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
